In my 16 years in the staffing industry, I have seen many different niche marketed staffing companies. I would like to say that I have seen them all, but I know that is not true! When I was in the staffing software industry, I worked with many that had very specific, technical needs, but I would argue that property management staffing is as highly specific as any of them.
The reason for this is that you are dealing with someone’s home and family. This is not something to take lightly, and quite frankly, many generalist staffing firms, who do not deal with this niche on a daily basis, don’t understand this.
It is not just a matter of knowing Fair Housing Laws. It is understanding what people need and expect when I comes to servicing their home. It is knowing what their needs are, what makes them comfortable in their community, and what is cost effective when balancing turnover rates and expenditures.
As in all staffing situations, there are hard and soft skills. Word, excel, a degree, AMSI, YARDI years of experience. These are hard skills that are fairly easy to assess, but the soft skills, such as the personality to truly care about your residents and employees, these are not so easy to uncover, and may be far more important than the hard skills.
